But Is an Online Prescription Legal? (Yes, It Is)

This is a question I hear a lot. And the answer is simple: yes.

All schedules of medicines can now be prescribed online. The law has been updated to recognise electronic prescriptions issued by a registered healthcare professional as fully valid. To be legally valid, the prescription must be issued by a registered healthcare professional, include all necessary patient and medication details, and have an encypted electronic signature. You can then simply take it to your local pharmacy to be dispensed. No extra paperwork, no confusion – just a clean, legal script.

Is It Private? Can I Speak Openly?

Absolutely. The same confidentiality rules apply online as they do in my rooms. Your medical information is protected by law (that's POPIA, South Africa's privacy law). And our video call is secure and encrypted – not a public app.

You can talk freely. I'm still your doctor. I just happen to be on a screen.

A Few Honest Words About Emergencies

An online doctor is not for emergencies. If you have severe chest pain and abdominal pain, severe bleeding, trouble breathing, or anything life-threatening – call 10111 or go to your nearest emergency room immediately. Please.

For everything else? Virtual care can be a safe, effective, and often faster alternative.
